Bauhaus of the Seas Sails mentioned in the EU Ocean Pact
The European Commission’s newly unveiled European Ocean Pact (COM(2025) 281) puts the spotlight on the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project as a model for creative, community-driven marine restoration. The Pact was officially presented this week at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, from 9-13 June 2025, where EU leaders outlined their vision for safeguarding the ocean through innovation, culture, and collaboration.
The Ocean Pact marks the EU’s first integrated strategy for ocean protection. It brings together policies on marine biodiversity, climate resilience, sustainable blue economy, and ocean governance into a single framework. The Pact sets out six priority areas, including a strong focus on research, innovation, and citizen engagement. It also lays the groundwork for a future Ocean Act by 2027.
Within this framework, Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is highlighted as a “lighthouse initiative” that embodies the values of the New European Bauhaus – sustainability, beauty, and inclusion. The project is praised for connecting design, science, and local communities to reduce pollution and regenerate coastal ecosystems.
The Pact also notes that the Commission will scale up its European Coalition for Ocean Literacy (EU4Ocean), an initiative that already engages thousands of organisations, youth groups, and schools. As part of this expansion, the EU4Ocean platform will work directly with the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails consortium, using tools like the European Atlas of the Seas to raise awareness and increase ocean literacy across Europe.
In connection with this, our partner TBA21-Academy played an active role at the Ocean Conference in Nice, contributing to discussions on ocean literacy, cultural transformation, and the role of art in shaping sustainable marine futures.
