Bauhaus of the Seas and Digital Storytelling: Exploring Cultural and Sustainable Design at QUT
The QUT Design Lab in Brisbane is set to host two Bauhaus of the Seas Sails related thought-provoking guest seminars that delve into the intersection of digital technologies, cultural heritage, and sustainable design.
The first seminar, Bauhaus of the Seas – a Vision for the New European Bauhaus, takes place on Monday, March 24, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM local time, and will feature our project coordinator Professor Nuno Jardim Nunes as keynote speaker.
The second seminar, Storytelling as a Bridge to Heritage and Cultural Identity, will follow on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM local time, led by Professor Valentina Nisi. Both events will be held at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct (Building Z9, Room 607) and will be available for in-person and virtual attendance via Zoom.
Bauhaus of the Seas: A Framework for Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Interventions
Professor Nuno Jardim Nunes, a Visiting Professor at the QUT Design Lab will discuss how digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), distributed ledger technologies (DLTs), decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and interactive storytelling, are being leveraged to support urban sustainability efforts. The seminar will highlight the role of blockchain in promoting social good and traceability in participatory design processes, as seen in the BIG project, a Horizon Europe-funded initiative.
With a research portfolio spanning human-computer interaction, sustainability, and design, Nunes’ insights will shed light on how digital technologies can engage citizens in eco-conscious urban planning.
Storytelling for Cultural Heritage and Identity
On March 25, Valentina Nisi will present Storytelling as a Bridge to Heritage and Cultural Identity, exploring how digital storytelling has been used in multiple EU projects to foster social inclusion and cultural heritage preservation.
Her discussion will focus on initiatives such as the MEMEX project, which facilitated community-driven storytelling in Lisbon, Paris, and Barcelona, providing marginalized groups with an interactive platform to engage with their cultural heritage. Additionally, she will highlight the LogaCulture project, which combines locative games, augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) to connect people with their cultural and natural surroundings.
Valentina Nisi, a digital media and design expert, has an extensive background in multimedia narratives, VR/AR/MX technologies, and digital cultural experiences. Her research integrates sustainability and social inclusion with cutting-edge interactive media, influencing tourism, urban planning, and inclusive design.
