“Interferences in the Tagus” in exhibition at CAM-Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Part of Oeiras Pilot

“Freeze: Frequencies Shaping Ecosystems” performance, held on February 22, 2025, at the CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, was a captivating highlight of Francisca Rocha Gonçalves‘ exploration of the Tagus River ecosystem. This immersive event was part of the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project, aiming to promote sustainable and inclusive design solutions for coastal cities. The performance brought Francisca’s deep-listening research to life through a mesmerizing display of light, sound, and ephemeral ice sculptures, evoking natural weather phenomena and the passage of time.

Photos from the event reveal the delicate beauty of the melting ice forms, transforming into a single drop of water that becomes part of CAM’s garden ecosystem. This powerful metaphor reflects the interconnectedness of marine life and human activity, aligning with the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails vision to foster a new relationship between coastal communities and the oceans. The project’s focus on sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics is beautifully encapsulated in Francisca’s artistic response to critical ecological issues, inspiring reflection on the urgent need for marine conservation and climate neutrality.

Francisca’s artistic project was developed during the Art & Science Residency “A Call to the Sea”, one of three innovative programs developed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in partnership with the Oeiras and Lisbon Municipalities. This initiative is part of the broader Bauhaus of the Seas Sails Lighthouse Project, which aims to transform coastal cities and promote sustainable ocean practices.

We invite you to explore Francisca’s work through the immersive sound installation “Interferences in the Tagus”, which is on display at the Sound Room of Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian until May 19, 2025.
